Kings Head Cottage

Peasmarsh, East Sussex

This Grade II listed timber-frame cottage in Peasmarsh forms part of a historic terrace, with the section we worked on added as an 18th-century extension to the original 1650s dwelling. The building exemplifies traditional vernacular construction, with horizontal weatherboarding, clay-tiled roofs, and a rear catslide, alongside evidence of previous repair interventions and a patchwork of original and modern timbers within the roof structure.

Studio four point ten were appointed to guide this technically challenging project, assisting the client in securing the necessary listed building consents to address structural failure, undertake sensitive conservation repairs, and make carefully considered internal alterations. The project included timber repairs and replacement, façade reinstatement, and the adaptation of interiors to support more comfortable modern living while retaining the cottage’s historic character.

This project demonstrates our expertise in navigating complex planning and heritage approvals for protected buildings, balancing preservation with contemporary requirements, and delivering interventions that respect and reinforce the architectural and historical significance of the site.
