Old Skittle Alley
Carlingcott, Bath
Nestled in the rolling countryside of Carlingcott, Bath, the Beehive skittle alley is a former village pub outbuilding, once alive with local activity, that had fallen into severe disrepair. Our project involved conservation repair and sensitive renovation of the derelict stone barn, transforming it into a functional, cosy and inspiring space to live, entertain and work.
Extensive consolidation of the stone walls and careful repair of the timber roof structure preserved as much of the original material as possible. Interventions were minimal externally, limited to new metal roof coverings and carefully placed openings in the landscape facing gable to frame the spectacular valley views. Inside, the split-level barn celebrates the building’s inherent qualities, the double-height main space showcases the previously concealed timber scissor trusses, while a new plywood library wall and reclaimed materials, including parquet tiles, scaffold-board cladding, and glass-block accents, enrich the interior.
The project was highly collaborative, with our client’s passion and bold ideas integral to shaping the building’s renewed personality. Every stage of the work - from concept through construction - was a process of discovery, responding to the building as it revealed itself. The result is a vibrant, characterful space that safeguards a historic structure while breathing new life and joy into its use.
