the charred cabin
HOME OFFICE AND GARDEN CABIN - CARLINGCOTT VILLAGE, BATH
This garden cabin is now complete, clad in striking deep-charred Larch (otherwise known as Shou Sugi Ban) with patinated mild steel door canopies and a bespoke perforated steel log store. Inside, it reveals a rich and characterful interior of deep red painted boarding and sawn English Oak wall linings, creating a truly wholesome place to work and rest within its garden setting.
The cabin provides a dedicated home working studio alongside a separate workshop, designed for a property on the outskirts of Bath. The dark charred timber boards, warm autumnal tones, and log burning stove combine to form a space that feels both grounded and inviting, while the crafted oak joinery adds a tactile quality that enriches the experience of working here.
Although rooted in a traditional cabin form, the design is elevated by its bold metalwork detailing and asymmetric roof pitches, giving the building a distinctive presence and making it something a little more special.
We worked closely with the client throughout the making of this project, being directly involved on site to help build the structure and complete the interior joinery ourselves, ensuring that the quality of the design was carried through into every detail of the finished cabin.
The concept began as a traditional ‘cabin in the woods’ interwoven with elements of the ruin. From the outset, it was important that the building embodied a rich, warming interior - as place to rest, work, and connect with the garden. Now complete, visitors often remark that the finished cabin is…
“really quite unlike anything they have seen before.”
