The Old Tannery

Bradford-on-Avon, Bath

As part of the gardens surrounding the Grade II listed Turleigh Tannery, a late 18th- to early 19th-century former industrial building converted to a residence, studio four point ten were commissioned to design a sculptural installation that would both screen an adjacent property and act as a focal point within the historic garden.

The resulting work is an undulating screen of timber, metal, and glass, carefully woven around existing trees to respond sensitively to the natural setting. Its flowing, curved form references the site’s history as a leather tannery, evoking the movement of millpond waters and ancient streams that once powered the building. Throughout the day, the screen interacts with light, reflecting shifting colours and views across the garden, creating a dynamic, animated experience that is at once lively and composed.

The project exemplifies our ability to merge heritage sensitivity with contemporary artistic intervention, crafting functional and experiential elements that enrich and animate the narrative of historic sites.
