Pump Cottages

Lullington, Frome

Pump Cottages is a Grade II listed pair of picturesque stone cottages in Lullington, near Frome, designed by the notable Victorian architect T. H. Wyatt in 1861. Part of the historic Orchardlea estate, the cottages form part of a wider group of mid-Victorian estate buildings by Wyatt, characterised by their carefully crafted stonework, mullioned windows and romantic architectural detailing.

Studio four point ten were appointed to survey and explore the sensitive adaptation of one of the cottages, addressing the practical challenges of its compact historic layout, including a lack of bathrooms and an awkward bedroom arrangement. The project considers how the cottage could be adapted to provide greater comfort, convenience and accessibility while retaining its distinctive character and historic fabric.

Studio four point ten were appointed to survey and explore the sensitive adaptation of one of the cottages, considering how its compact historic layout could be carefully reworked to provide greater comfort, accessibility and convenience for later life. The challenge was to introduce new interventions and services, including improved bathroom provision, while remaining conscious of the significance of the historic plan and the potential impact of change on this distinctive heritage asset.
