NEW BUILD AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN - NORTHFLEET, KENT

A new build training centre designed for a charity in North Kent, built as an extension to a neighbouring Grade II listed building within the heart of the Northfleet Conservation Area.

The project involved the demolition of an unattractive former surgery building which in large governed the footprint of the new proposal. Alongside the architectural design, we developed a full landscape scheme for a parking and entrance courtyard that was to lift the building from its hard surroundings, and provide a welcoming approach for visitors.

The external design focussed on hardwood timber cladding with a dark zinc roof to emulate the contextual use of slates, with pockets of changing landscape designed and planted to address different views from within the building. For the interior works, the budget challenged us to think more about the use of proportion, junctions and panelling of surfaces opposed to expensive materials. Through considered placement and variation of window size were also able to add greater interest and depth by engaging with the colourful landscape spaces outside, and planting that changes with the seasons.

The project gained full Planning and Listed Building consent.
